Jamal Edwards was penniless when he died from heart attack

Tragic music mogul Jamal Edwards died penniless according to figures from the probate office, despite claims he was worth £350m.

The SBTV founder and music entrepreneur died of a heart attack in February aged 31 after taking cocaine and drinking alcohol – seven years after he was awarded an MBE for services to the industry.

Jamal, who helped launch the careers of global superstar Ed Sheeran and grime artist Stormzy, was reportedly worth between £8 and £335million but official documents show that he left a gross estate of £45,502.76 and after paying his debts his net estate was zero.

The YouTube star recruited leading celebrity lawyers Russells to draw up his will and had promised his estate to his family, including mum and Loose women panellist Brenda, dad Patrick, sister Tanisha, his two aunts and a close friend.

He signed his will on February 20, 2020, two years before he passed away, and had created a trust fund to distribute his estate but now his beneficiaries will not receive anything.

Jamal founded pioneering online music platform SBTV in 2006 and was credited with helping to launch the careers of a string of UK music stars, including singer Jessie J. 

His channel, which he used to upload content of emerging talent, gained over 1million subscribers and also featured the likes of Emeli Sande and Rita Ora. 

He was also an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust, a charity led by King Charles, and in 2014 was made an MBE for his services to music.

Following his untimely death on February 20, 2022, tributes for Jamal poured in, with singer-songwriter Ed showing his extreme sadness towards someone he considered family.

He said: ‘Jamal is my brother. His light shone so bright. He only used it to illuminate others and never asked for anything in return.

‘I would not be here without him, professionally and personally. There will never be anything close to what he is, but I’m so grateful to have existed within his orbit.’

Jamal’s mum, singer and TV presenter Brenda, 53, shared on Loose Women following the Queen’s passing, a private letter King Charles had sent to her, in which he expressed his sorrow and deepest condolences.

He wrote: ‘I can only begin to imagine what an immense and aching gap he will leave in your life and that of your daughter Tanisha, and my heart goes out to both of you, more than I can ever say.

‘I shall never forget Jamal’s support and dedication in helping with my Prince’s Trust over the years.’ 

In September, Brenda and Jamal’s sister Tanisha held a star-studded charity evening to raise funds for the Jamal Edwards Trust Gala. 

Singers Lewis Capaldi, Jessie Ware, and Ed all performed at the Gala event, where friends, family, and celebrities came together to remember Jamal and support the charity, which was set up in his honour to support the causes he cared most about. 

Brenda, who said continuing to appear on Loose Women has helped her to stay strong, wore customised trainers in tribute to Jamal, which were embellished in the SBTV logo, while Tanisha’s footwear showed a photo of her brother’s smiling face.

In April, Brenda spoke for the first time about her son’s sudden death during a special segment on ITV’s Loose Women.

Brenda told her co-star Coleen Nolan that she was by Jamal’s side when he passed away, as was his sister, and the rest of their close family.

She said: ‘I am taking each day as it comes.

‘The one thing that I do want to say is I was with him and his sister was with us. We were all at home.

‘It was sudden and it was unexpected and he went into a cardiac arrest and then he passed with me holding his hand so I get a little bit of comfort from knowing I was with him.’ 

She continued: ‘As much as that is comfort it’s a vision that I’m never going to forget and I wake up every morning and all his photos are obviously still in the house and I look at him and say good morning baby and I say goodnight baby and I think doing that is what’s keeping me going.’  

Brenda went onto say that she ‘constantly feels Jamal’s presence’ and being a person of religious faith has helped her cope with the unbearable loss.
