Michael is set to play the younger incarnation of his father’s character Tony Soprano in the The Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints Of Newark.

He spoke with Vanity Fair earlier this year about his preparation for the role of the famed mobster in his formative years, saying he listened to audio from the HBO series of Tony Soprano’s sessions with psychiatrist Jennifer Melfi, played by Lorraine Bracco.

Said Michael: ‘It was really hard to watch my dad. I recorded four hours of his monologues with Melfi and walked around New York with them constantly, constantly, constantly playing in my ear.’

Amid his relative inexperience – he’s also been seen on The Deuce, The Boy, the Dog and the Clown, and Youngest – Michael said he had full faith in The Sopranos creator David Chase in auditioning for the high-profile part in the upcoming prequel.

‘I had this unspoken trust that David wasn’t going to cast me if there was even a shred that this isn’t going to work,’ he said.

The young actor joins a cast that includes Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Cory Stoll, Billy Magnussen and Alessandro Nivola in the prequel to the HBO series, which is set amid the unrest of the 1967 Newark riots and tensions between the African-American and Italian-American communities.

Michael was only 14 when his famed father died following a heart attack during a Rome vacation on June 19, 2013.

Earlier this month, he shared a childhood photo alongside his late father, who was also noted for his cinematic performances in films such as True Romance, 8MM and Killing Them Softly.

Michael, whose mother Marcy Wudarski was married to James Gandolfini from 1999 thru 2002, captioned the post: Thank you Dad. I love you. Happy Father’s Day.’
