Jamie Carragher has praised Gareth Southgate after the England manager’s squad for Euro 2024 was revealed.

Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, Jarrad Branthwaite, James Madison and James Trafford have all missed out on the final 26-man squad, with Premier League winner Jack Grealish a notable omission.

Meanwhile Harry Maguire, a mainstay in Southgate’s defence, will also miss out on a tournament squad for the first time since 2016, after being unable to overcome a calf injury.

Retweeting his own post following the announcement of Southgate’s provisional squad last month the former Liverpool defender praised the England manager for his selection.

‘I like the provisional @England squad Gareth has picked, it’s bold & has some exciting young talent in.’ Carragher wrote.

A key component in previous major tournaments for Southgate, Harry Maguire has been left out due to injury

‘But it does have the feel of a squad a new manager would pick after a tournament is over. Out with the old in with the new!’

Grealish’s commission came as a particular surprise, particularly given his showing as a second-half substitute in England’s friendly win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday.

Mail Sport’s Oliver Holt wrote: ‘Surprised about the omission of Grealish.

‘Love watching him play when he’s at his best and thought he might have rescued his place with that cameo in Newcastle on Monday night.

‘But hard to argue with Southgate picking on form, as so many have urged him to do for so long.’

Rio Ferdinand asked his audience on social media for their opinions: ‘Some big calls from Gareth today… Thoughts?’

Meanwhile Gianni Buttice questioned Maguire’s future at international level with Southgate set to step down from his role after the tournament.
