Jamie Carragher labelled Moises Caicedo’s Chelsea debut as a ‘nightmare’ after the midfielder struggled following his introduction against West Ham on Sunday.

10-men Hammers stunned Chelsea to score a third strike in stoppage time that Caicedo was at fault for after hauling Emerson down to the ground in the penalty box.

Lucas Paqueta scored the resulting spot-kick to hand West Ham a deserved three points as Carragher blasted the Premier League’s record-signing Caicedo for his showing.

It was a debut to forget for the Ecuadorian as he effectively handed the hosts three points by making the foul in a moment of rash decision-making.

Carragher said on Sky Sports: ‘Caicedo has had a bit of a nightmare since he came on. It’s a poor, lazy challenge.’

Carragher had earlier criticised the midfielder after he sent a shot way off-target with just his third touch of the game, saying: ‘He comes in, just his third touch for Chelsea. Not known for his goals, not sure he’s been bought for that!’

Caicedo was left on the bench by Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino who had decided his new £115million arrival wasn’t ready to start following his move.

He was then introduced in the 67th minute as the Blues sort to find an equaliser after Michail Antonio re-established West Ham’s lead.

The 21-year-old defensive midfielder struggled to protect his defence, despite the Hammers being down to 10-men after Nayef Aguerd was sent off for a second bookable offence.

The hosts continued to attack as Caicedo and his team-mates struggled to build on their man-advantage with over 20 minutes left to play at the London Stadium.

Fellow Sky pundit Jamie Redknapp issued a similarly critical review of Caicedo’s debut as he analysed the penalty error.

Redknapp said: ‘Caicedo hasn’t had any minutes for 60 days and you can see that rustiness. Only the manager knows whether he was ready and he isn’t quite there yet.

‘He will get better. As it can only get better after giving a penalty on your debut.’

The former Brighton star also lost possession eight times, made two fouls and had one shot off-target during a horrid 37 minute outing.

Caicedo cut a dejected figure after the match as West Ham players celebrated their first victory of the new Premier League season.

Hammers boss David Moyes and Blues midfielder Enzo Fernandez consoled the midfielder before he got up off the pitch.
