Euro 2024 gets underway next Friday, with 24 nations competing to win the trophy.

Former England defender Jamie Carragher has made his predictions ahead of Euro 2024

Carragher believes that England will be knocked out by France in the semi-finals at Euro 2024.

According to Carragher, France’s greater experience and squad depth could see them prevail.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Carragher said: ‘I think England’s best team v France’s best team is a toss of a coin. Some of the players who can’t get in the French team, they’re winning Champions Leagues, they’re playing for some of the biggest clubs in the world. That’s my only feeling.

‘Can you imagine England losing Kane for that game or Bellingham? France have still got player after player after playing to come in.’

Carragher made reference to William Saliba, with the defender having frequently excelled for Arsenal despite not being guaranteed a place in the France side.

He said: ‘You look at someone like Saliba. He very rarely gets a chance. I think he’d be our best centre-back. He would be an absolute shoo-in in the England team.

‘My one worry for England, coming up against France, Mbappe and Griezmann, two of the best in the world, I’m not sure we’ve got the defenders who can stop them.’

Carragher believes that hosts Germany will overcome Portugal in the other semi-final.

However, he feels that France will be too strong for Germany in the final.

Carragher said: ‘I keep going back to the squad of France and who they can bring off the bench. I think Germany are in the final because they’re at home.

‘The experience they’ve got with players who won the World Cup. I just think France will have enough to beat Germany in their own back yard.’

Carragher believes that England will beat Austria in the round of 16 before getting the better of Hungary in the quarter-finals, with Southgate’s side tipped to finish top of their group ahead of second-placed Denmark.
