Jarryd Hayne is adjusting to his new life as a Christian missionary-in-training as he awaits trial on rape charges.

The ex-NRL star is a week into a six-month course at a Bible college in Perth after jetting out of Sydney earlier this month.

He was spotted outside the Youth With a Mission Centre in East Perth on Monday, where he studies under strict conditions.

Hayne, 31, is said to be settling well into the intensive program.

‘He comes into the cafe to order his coffee and is nice and always has a smile on his face,’ a staff member said.

Other staff said Hayne was happy to be out of the public eye.

‘I see him around and he seems really happy to be here,’ a fellow student said. ‘He mostly keeps to himself.

‘It’s a good thing for him to be doing under such circumstances.’

The YWAM centre where Hayne will spend his days is tucked away in an industrial area on the outskirts of the Perth CBD.

A huge open-plan lobby contains a cafe and dining area where meals are provided for all students.

More than a dozen small children were playing nearby when the Daily Mail visited – two engaged in an energetic game of laser tag – or sitting with their families who either visit or live in co-op housing in or near the building.

Hayne convinced a magistrate to vary his bail terms to let him relocate to Perth by highlighting the strict conditions of the course.

The former Parramatta Eels star will switch his plush Sydney pad for a single bed in a male-only dorm room a short walk from class.

Alcohol is forbidden, even on weekends, and he must get permission from YWAM staff to go anywhere.

If he misses a single class it will be reported to the Newcastle DPP and he must still report to a police station three times a week.

Two letters of support from the Christian group were presented to the court, noting it was fully aware of the charges against him.

Hayne’s daily life consists of prayer, classroom lectures, evangelism, chores and work in the centre, and regular worship.

He is one of 10 students in his $6,580 Discipleship Training School class and about 600 study at the centre all up.

After three months of classes he will undertake missionary field work from October, though it was not clear how his legal situation would affect that.

‘This course develops participants in their personal understanding of God and relationship with Him as well as core concepts of missions and processes of evangelism,’ course director Caleb Brownhill said last week.

‘We are aware of the charges against Jarryd. YWAM Perth supports all our students in their desire to grow in Christian character. This would include Jarryd.’

YWAM’s website described the course as ‘six months of personally experiencing God and living the adventure of taking His message to the nations’.

Hayne will need a timeout to return to Newcastle District Court on July 25 for a mention ahead of his September 2020 trial.

He was charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault inflicting actual bodily harm, and one of sexual intercourse without consent over the alleged rape of a woman on the night of the NRL Grand Final last year.

Hayne allegedly had sex with the 26-year-old without her consent and bit her on the genitals so hard she bled.
