The impact sent the vehicle 550 feet down the road near Golden State Boulevard and Chestnut Avenue, The SF Gate reports.

Images show what remains of its engine exposed while the interior of the car is completely crushed and cut in half. Officers say the damage seen was caused solely by the collision.

Officers say they found the steering wheel in the passenger seat. The driver was said to be still strapped in.

Posting pictures of the horror smash online, troopers wrote: ‘Lucky to be alive and a reminder FOG season has arrived.

‘This morning officers responded to a vehicle vs big rig collision. Speed and reduced visibility due to fog were factors in the collision.

‘Luckily the driver sustained non life threatening injuries and was able to walk out of his mangled vehicle.’
