Jeff Fenech: Aussie boxing legend ‘unwittingly received drug packages including cocaine and meth from Los Angeles traffickers’

Former Australian boxing world champion Jeff Fenech has been embroiled in a drug trafficking case in the United States.

According to US court documents revealed by The Guardian, Fenech, 59, was the unwitting recipient of packages containing narcotics incluidng cocaine and methamphetamine. 

The delivery of the package was part of an alleged drug trafficking organisation operating between the United States and Australia.

No charges have been laid against the three-weight world champion, while his lawyer has stressed that he is not a suspect for any criminal offence.

Fenech was named in an affidavit filed in California’s US district court as part of charges made against an individual called Moustapha Moustapha.

Moustapha has been charged with possession of firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and cocaine, and is allegewdly a member of the Moustapha DTO (drug trafficking organisation).

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges laid against him. 

The affidavit claims Fenech was allegedly an intended recipient for an unspecified number of deliveries =, The deliveries consisted of ’24 packages containing 24kgs of suspected cocaine and methamphetamine’.

The court document does not allege that Fenech was part of the DTO.

The affidavit adds that the packages allegedly sent from the US to Australia were intercepted by federal police in Australia in December. 

A drug enforcement special agent from the US based in Australia claims that Australia’s federal police subsequently conducted an undercover package delivery at Fenech’s residence in Sydney.

‘After dropping the package off at the residence, AFP observed Fenech pick up the package. After witnessing Fenech pick up the package, AFP executed search warrants at the residence … and interviewed Fenech.’

In the interview, Fenech allegedly stated ‘that he’d been collecting packages for an extended period of time … Fenech stated that he believed that the packages contained luxury watches and was unaware that the packages contained drugs,’ according to the special agent.

The former boxer’s lawyer said he is not a suspect for any criminal offence, adding that no criminal charges have been laid or are expected to be made against him.
