Jeff Glor is named as new anchor of CBS Evening News

CBS has named Jeff Glor as the new anchor of the ‘CBS Evening News.’

The network on Wednesday appointed the 42-year-old Glor to a job that has been held by Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Bob Schieffer, Katie Couric and, most recently, Scott Pelley. Glor, from upstate New York, has been with CBS News for 10 years as a reporter and fill-in anchor on various broadcasts and CBS’ digital operation.

The ‘CBS Evening News’ has been a distant third to the ABC and NBC newscasts, which led to Pelley’s ouster.

The 42-year-old Jeff Glor will take over the prestigious position in the coming weeks

Anthony Mason has filled in for the past several months. Mason will continue as an evening news reporter and co-host of CBS’ Saturday morning broadcast.

In a statement, CBS News President David Rhodes heralded Glor as ‘a thoughtful, probing journalist with the versatility to anchor in any circumstance – from daily reporting to the most significant events of our time.’

‘He represents the best journalistic values and traditions that will carry the Evening News into a digital future,’ he added.

Glor extended his appreciation for the opportunity and said he was honored to fill such a prestigious position at the network.

‘CBS News has an extraordinary history that is meaningful to so many,’ Glor said. ‘I am beyond grateful to continue to play a role in its future.’

Glor will compete with David Muir at ABC and Lester Holt at NBC.

Pelley was fired from CBS Evening News at the end of May due to low ratings amid alleged friction with producers

Pelley was unceremoniously ousted while on assignment for 60 Minutes back in May, according to Page 6.

‘It’s been coming for a long time. This could have been handled better – [Pelley] is away on a story, and they’re cleaning out his office,’ a source told the gossip column.

‘It’s not the correct way to treat the face of CBS news,’ they added.

The move apparently came because of friction between Pelley and Rhodes. The source said the pair ‘don’t get on.’

‘[Rhodes] ‘is making [Pelley] move to 60 Minutes,’ the source said.

Pelley made a name for himself as the network’s Chief White House Correspondent between 1997 and 1999.

He then served as a Correspondent on 60 Minutes II from 1999 to 2004, before moving to 60 Minutes.

The silver-haired anchor took over from Katie Couric as the anchor for CBS Evening News in 2011.

Glor began his career at CBS in 2007, reporting for the news broadcaster in New York City.

Glor was instrumental in covering some of the biggest stories in the last decade for CBS News, including Sandy Hook, the Boston Marathon bombing and Superstorm Sandy.
