Jennifer Hudson dons a retro bun and swing coat as she channels Aretha Franklin for Respect biopic

Jennifer Hudson was reportedly handpicked, by the Queen of Soul herself, to take on the starring role in her biopic Respect.

And the 38-year-old American Idol alum has transformed into Aretha Franklin as she films in New York City.

Just days after the first photos from set were released, Hudson was seen again in retro garb on Wednesday.

Transformation: Jennifer Hudson has transformed into legendary singer Aretha Franklin while filming the Respect biopic in New York City on Wednesday

Jennifer looked plucked from the 1960s, with her hair styled up in a retro ‘do.

She was wrapped up up in a golden swing coat, that landed at her knee, over a red patterned dress that tied into a bow around her neck.

Footwear was kept sensible and true to the era, as the Dreamgirls star wore brown kitten heels.

She seemed to have a worried expression on her face, and walked with her hands clasped at her waist.

OG: She struck a strong resemblance to the late singer, even matching winged eyeliner

For accessories she wore gold hoop earrings and was spotted with a large diamond wedding ring.

Previous pictures from set showed Jennifer filming with Marlon Waynes who plays her on-screen husband, Ted White.

Aretha was just 19 when she tied the knot with Ted, and together they had a son, Ted White Jr.

Ted was reportedly abusive to Aretha, and the marriage ended in divorce in 1969.

Not seen on Tuesday but also starring in the film are Forest Whitaker (as her father C.L. Franklin), Audra McDonald (as mother Barbara Franklin), Mary J. Blige (as fellow musician Dinah Washington) and Tate Donovan (as John Hammond).

Directed by Liesl Tommy, Respect tells the life story of Aretha, who died at age 76 in 2018.

The late music icon was directly involved with development of the film, including actress selection, up until her death in August.

Respect is set for release August 14, 2020.

The next season of National Geographic’s Genius series will also focus on the life of Franklin, with Cynthia Erivo in the lead role.
