Gushing that she has fallen in love with being a parent, the Silver Linings Playbook star admitted it was ‘scary’ to talk about becoming a mother after friends warned her that she may not ‘fall in love right away’, but she admitted that as soon as she gave birth it felt like it was ‘day one of my life’.

New role: Jennifer Lawrence has spoken about her new role in life, after becoming a mother to her son earlier this year in a candid new interview for the October 2022 issue of Vogue

Jennifer and her husband of three years Cooke Maroney, 38, welcomed her baby boy at the start of the year, but had not confirmed the gender or his name, explaining now that she and Cooke decided on the name Cy after the postwar American painter Cy Twombly, who is one of her gallerist husband’s favorite artists.

She admitted to Vogue ‘it’s so scary to talk about motherhood. Only because it’s so different for everybody. If I say, It was amazing from the start, some people will think, It wasn’t amazing for me at first, and feel bad.’

‘Fortunately I have so many girlfriends who were honest. Who were like, It’s scary. You might not connect right away. You might not fall in love right away. So I felt so prepared to be forgiving.’

‘I remember walking with one of my best friends at, like, nine months, and being like, Everyone keeps saying that I will love my baby more than my cat. But that’s not true. Maybe I’ll love him as much as my cat?’

While she felt well-prepared about welcoming her first child, Jennifer went on to admit that any fears about not connecting with her son disappeared when they met.

‘The morning after I gave birth, I felt like my whole life had started over. Like, Now is day one of my life. I just stared. I was just so in love. I also fell in love with all babies everywhere.’ she gushed.

‘Newborns are just so amazing. They’re these pink, swollen, fragile little survivors,’ Jennifer continued. ‘Now I love all babies. Now I hear a baby crying in a restaurant and I’m like, Awwww, preciousssss.…

The Oscar-winner added that she has fallen more in love with her husband after watching him become a father, explaining: ‘My heart has stretched to a capacity that I didn’t know about. I include my husband in that.’

‘And then they’re both just, like, out there—walking around, crossing streets. He’s gonna drive one day. He’s gonna be a stupid teenager and be behind the wheel of a car. And I’m just gonna be like, Good night! You know? Like, who sleeps?’

‘I mean the euphoria of Cy is just—Jesus, it’s impossible,’ Lawrence said. ‘I always tell him, “I love you so much it’s impossible”‘.

Jennifer, who has been on a hiatus from acting, also spoke about her pregnancy for the first time during the candid cover story .

She admitted she found herself reflecting on the challenges to women’s rights as she waited to give birth in the context of the recent Roe Vs Wade overturning, saying: ‘I remember a million times thinking about it while I was pregnant.’

‘Thinking about the things that were happening to my body. And I had a great pregnancy. I had a very fortunate pregnancy. But every single second of my life was different. And it would occur to me sometimes: What if I was forced to do this?’

Jennifer was also keen to discuss with Vogue her concerns about raising a son in the US, speaking out on gun violence in schools.

‘I’m raising a little boy who is going to go to school one day. Guns are the number-one cause of death for children in the United States. And people are still voting for politicians who receive money from the NRA,’ she said.

‘It blows my mind. I mean if Sandy Hook didn’t change anything? We as a nation just went, Okay! We are allowing our children to lay down their lives for our right to a second amendment that was written over 200 years ago.’

So many of my films in the past have been about my mother, my childhood. I wonder what will happen now that I’ll be witnessing somebody else’s childhood. And I wonder what he’s going to be talking about with his therapist. She wouldn’t put me down. She kisses me on the mouth. She asked me not to go to college.”

Although she has mainly been focused on parenthood in the recent past, Jennifer is currently prepping for the release of the upcoming feature Causeway.

The performer will star alongside performers such as Brian Tyree Henry and Samira Wiley in the forthcoming film, which will premiere next month at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.

In addition to starring as an American soldier who returns to her hometown of New Orleans after a traumatic brain injury in Afghanistan, the actress serves as one of its producers in the first project from her production company, Excellent Cadaver.

Much of the movie was shot in 2019 before Covid forced the team to take a two year break, returning to work in 2021 when Jennifer was newly pregnant.

Speaking about returning to movies in her new role as a mother, the four-time Oscar nominee explained she has noticed a common thread running through her past projects.

‘So many of my films in the past have been about my mother, my childhood. I wonder what will happen now that I’ll be witnessing somebody else’s childhood. And I wonder what he’s going to be talking about with his therapist. She wouldn’t put me down. She kisses me on the mouth. She asked me not to go to college.’
