Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? viewers were left in hysterics after Jeremy Clarkson brutally told a contestant ‘he came, saw and made a mess’ after he used all of his lifelines very early on.
Tom Rowan-Young, a violinist, from Manchester, started off well by answering the Fastest Finger time in just 4.25 seconds, before getting four questions in a row correct when he took to the hot seat.
But things quickly took a downwards turn when the fifth question asked him to name the famous battle which was depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry – and he relied on host Jeremy’s help by using him as his first lifeline to get to the £1, 000 mark.
‘I don’t actually know this one,’ Tom deliberated. ‘I’ve got an idea of what it is, but I think I’d like to use a lifeline just to be sure. May I ask you Jeremy?’
The host responded: ‘It’s unnerving that…anyway. Yes, it’s Hastings. It’s the Norman…’ to which Tom interrupted: ‘I thought it was that but once I saw the other answers…’
It didn’t take long for things to go from bad to worse when Tom was left stumped by question number seven, which asked: ‘Located in New York City, what nickname was given to the studio of Andy Warhol?’
‘This is really annoying because I watched an Andy Warhol documentary last month but can’t for the life of me remember where it was that he worked in,’ said Tom. ‘The Mint rings no bell. I think it’s The Factory…but I think it’s worth going 50/50 to see if it’s still there. If it isn’t, then I think I’d have to ask someone else.’
Tom relied on his 50/50 lifeline which left him with ‘The Factory’ and ‘The Mill,’ to which he analysed: ‘I’d have been happier if one of the other two which have gone were left…’ to which Jeremy snapped: ‘But they aren’t.’
Despite using another lifeline on the same question, Tom finally made it to the £8, 000 mark.

Taking to Twitter, one person penned: ‘This bloke is so annoying…we don’t need your life story just the answer to the question!’
After struggling to make it that far without the help of others, Tom then set his safety net at £16,000, before using his last lifeline – his second phone a friend – for the eighth question.
When asked what the name given to the structure in a plant cell where photosynthesis takes place was called, Tom, who was given the options of A: Rhizone B: Petiole C: Chloroplast D: Calyx, began: ‘Before the answers came up, I thought chlorophyll was the chemical which causes that which would obviously take me to Chloroplast.
‘The one that’s throwing me is Rhizone because I have heard of that, and was never sure of what the function was. If it was something else I probably would’ve heard of.’
Jeremy quickly replied: ‘What if you hadn’t heard of them you would’ve just gone with the one you had?’
When his phone a friend – a PHD student in bio-medicine at Cambridge – replied ‘Chloroplast,’ Tom said: ‘We both thought it, both pretty certain, Chloroplast final answer.’
However, exhausted by Tom’s efforts so far, Jeremy then cut to a break and joked: ‘We are here and have been for some time with Tom. He’s on £16,000 but has no lifelines remaining though.’

Speaking to Tom, he continued: ‘But £16,000 is your safety net so you have a free shot at £32,000. Shall we have a look at the question?
‘The Danish politician Birgitte Cyborg is the central character of which Nordic TV series? Borgen, Wallander, The Bridge or The Killing.’
Tom went on to admit that he had only heard of two of the programmes and had never heard of that character.
He explained: ‘Pointless me trying to talk through logic because there won’t be any. I’ve got nothing else to go on and nothing to lose so I think Wallander final answer.’
An exhausted Jeremy bluntly replied: ‘I won’t take up any more of your time. That’s wrong.
‘It was in fact Borgen. Just in case you are interested at home, Borgen is the nickname for Christiansborg Palace.
‘Wallander was the police inspector, was it played by Kenneth Branagh? The Bridge was fantastic and so is The Tunnel, the spin-off from it. The Killing was the Danish detective Sarah Lund.’

The host then turned to Tom and said: ‘No matter you came, you saw, you made a mess of it. Nevertheless, you are leaving with £16,000.’
And many who tuned in found the witty remark hilarious – and were quick to take to Twitter to offer their say.
‘You can tell when Jeremy doesn’t like someone,’ wrote one, while a second commented: ‘My god, this guy is awful. @JeremyClarkson on top form as always though!!’
A third added: ‘Tom is very hard to watch,’ while a fourth wrote: ‘This guy on Millionaire is taking way too long for someone on £3, 000 ffs. You can tell Jeremy hates him.’
A further commented: ‘This bloke is so annoying…we don’t need your life story just the answer to the question!’ wrote one, while another penned: ‘Omg this is painful.’
