Jermaine Jenas slams ‘SLOPPY’ Tottenham after conceding two late goals to lose to Sporting Lisbon

‘There were too many sloppy performances’: Jermaine Jenas slams ‘LETHARGIC’ Tottenham for ‘not turning up again’ in the Champions League after conceding two late goals to lose to Sporting Lisbon

Jermaine Jenas slammed Tottenham’s ‘sloppy’ performance against Sporting Lisbon and accused them of ‘not turning up again’ in the Champions League.

Spurs collapsed late on as they fell to a 2-0 defeat in the Portuguese capital on Tuesday evening.

Paulinho headed in from a corner in the 90th minute and then Arthur Gomes netted in the third minute of stoppage time just seconds after coming on as a substitute.

Tottenham conceded two late goals to lose 2-0 to Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League

It leaves Antonio Conte’s side with three points from their first two Champions League games after they won 2-0 against Marseille last week.

But even against the French side, Spurs only scored in the final 15 minutes after their opponents had a player sent off.

‘Sporting deserved it in my opinion,’ Jenas said on BT Sport after the defeat in Lisbon. ‘There was a stage of the game where neither side really deserved to win but I think Spurs just did not turn up, again, if I’m totally honest.

‘They spent 65 minutes against Marseille getting away with it and got the result based on a red card in that game. They’ve turned up to Lisbon today and not turned up again.

‘There were too many sloppy performances individually. In fairness to Lloris he was keeping them in the game. So those two late goals for Sporting Lisbon, I thought they thoroughly deserved them in the end. Spurs have got to have a good look at themselves and do better.’

Peter Crouch agreed, adding: ‘I thought they were too lax and the finishing was a little bit wayward. Some of the touches, I thought it was coming off Harry Kane at times, he was giving the ball away. There were too many performances that weren’t at the level expected in the Champions League and they got punished for it.’

‘They [Sporting] deserved to win the game over the 90 minutes,’ former Spurs player and manager Glenn Hoddle said. ‘There’s no doubt about it. They created the better chances, they always looked dangerous and Lloris made some great saves to keep Spurs in it.’

Jenas, who made over 200 appearances for Tottenham during an eight year spell at the club, continued to hammer Conte’s team.

‘They’re going to be really disappointed and they’ve got to have a look at themselves,’ the ex-midfielder said. ‘Weirdly, the points are on the board in the league, but their performances have been very much like that [tonight]. Very lethargic, they almost look tired in games.

‘Whether that’s a training situation that he’s still pushing them too hard, or whether it’s players out of form. Either way, they’ve got to pick it up and pick it up quick because that was miles off what Antonio Conte and a lot of Spurs fans are expecting.

‘I honestly can’t think of a clear cut chance they created tonight. That’s the bigger concern for me. We’re talking about a front three that’s so exciting. They’ve got so many options and scored so many goals.

‘But I don’t think any of them played well at all, Harry Kane is in that as well. Any chance that they created they were miles offside. They were so laborious in their passes.’
