Sports fans have been left shocked after noticing that a gymnast competing at the Paris Olympic Games was using an iconic Australian product before his routine.

South Australian Jesse Moore had an excellent Olympic Games, qualifying for the men’s all-round final last week.

The 21-year-old was the first Australian to make the final since Josh Jeffries at the London Games in 2012.

Moore finished 21st, impressing on the vault and showing off an improved routine on the pommel horse, his favoured event.

But it wasn’t just Moore’s athletic ability that captured the attention of Aussies watching at home, with eagle-eyed viewers noticing that he was using a trusty Coles plastic bag to hold his chalk during the parallel bars section of the event.

Before their routines, gymnasts dust their hands with magnesium carbonate, usually referred to as ‘chalk’, to help them get a good grip on equipment like the uneven or parallel bars.

In a now viral clip on TikTok, titled ‘Aussie Aussie Aussie’, Moore can be seen reaching into the Coles plastic bag to chalk his hands moments before his routine.

‘HAHAHAHAHAHHA! That Coles bag made it all the way to Paris and I can’t,’ commented one user.

‘Coles is now officially an unofficial sponsor,’ joked another.

‘He’s really getting his moneys worth out of it,’ said a third.

Several commenters wrote about the fact the bag must be quite old, as the supermarket now uses different reusable items.

‘Not just any Coles bag. An antique Coles bag from years gone by when you could carry more than a loaf of bread in them without breaking,’ one wrote.

‘And it’s the old recycled Coles bag they don’t even make any more! That’s an antique,’ another added.

The Coles official account also commented on the post, writing: ‘Icons recognise icons.’

‘I’m glad I could finally conquer that pommel routine. All that was going through my head was to finish strong and I did that,’ he said.

‘The goal is to push for a team next time and over the next four years, we’ll be striving for that.’

Japan’s Oka Shinnosuke scored 86.832 to win the gold medal, .233 ahead of China’s Zhang Boheng.

Xiao Routeng, also from China, was .468 behind for bronze with Moore scoring 80.430 across the six sections.
