Jessica Chastain clarifies why she’s ‘NOT doing’ film adaptation of Evelyn Hugo book

Jessica Chastain is clarifying her recent admission that she’s ‘not doing’ the film adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

Fans have been rallying for the Academy Award-winner, 46, to star in the historical drama, which follows an Old Hollywood star who lays out her life story in a final interview with an unknown reporter.

Specifically, many hoped she would play Celia St. James, who is also a famous actress and the titular character’s secret lover.

In a January sit-down with Andy Cohen, Chastain acknowledged the online chatter. ‘Sure, send me a script,’ she teased.

But in a now viral TikTok clip captured Tuesday, she is seen politely refusing to sign a copy of the novel, telling the fan: ‘I can’t sign that, just because I’m not doing it.’

So, Chastain took to Twitter on Wednesday to explain her reasoning, as well as to set the record straight on her attachment to the film.

‘I’ve been asked multiple times by fans, to sign books that I’m not attached to contractually,’ her tweet began.

‘Because it feels wrong, and like Im taking credit for someone else’s work, I’ll say I cant sign because I’m not doing it.’

Chastain continued: ‘That doesn’t mean I’ve read a bad script. I know how excited many you are about adaptations. Please don’t read too much into a video. There is no news about anything Except that I’m onstage until June 10th. Hope to see you #ADollsHouse.’

The Help actress is currently starring in Henrik Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House on Broadway.

Chastain stars as Nora Helmer in the re-imagined story which focuses on the lives of a group of middle class Norwegians in 1879.

Themes in the production include appearances, the power of money, and the place of women in a patriarchal society.

Nora is a wife and mother who is forced to question everything in her highly structured life.

The play opened March 9, just days before she and Halle Berry presented the Best Actress award at the Oscars.

In an interview with PBS, the Zero Dark Thirty star explained her approach to the character.

‘I tried to dial up the ways Nora was in control of the situation. So even if she’s playing innocent or playing a victim or playing helpless, it is still a choice she’s making,’ Chastain contended.

‘And she is still sort of, in significant ways, the director and stage manager of the proceedings, even if she gets what she wants by playing a sort of traditional woman.’

The story is told without the use of any props, except for chairs, which concerned the actress at first.

‘I was like, “What do you mean?” And it was very difficult for me to even imagine.’

The Guardian called her performance ‘captivating,’ and the New York Times called the production an ‘astonishing breakthrough coup,’ and named it a Critics Pick.

Not one to sit still, Chastain shot three different projects before taking to the stage.

A Mother’s Instinct, co-starring Anne Hathaway, will be released in September. The Division co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Memory co-starring Peter Sarsgaard are set to open later this year.

A Doll’s House is scheduled to run at the Hudson Theater through June 10.
