Jessica Mauboy excited for The Secret Daughter new season

She has developed serious acting chops in her leading role for The Secret Daughter.

And Jessica Mauboy, who is preparing for the launch of the Channel Seven series’ second season, is embracing her character Billie Carter’s more serious scenes.

The 28-year-old spoke with Stellar about ‘secretly loving’ awkward on-screen moments and what it was like to record with the late Dr G. Yunupingu for the show’s soundtrack.

Jessica Mauboy admits she loves making viewers of The Secret Daughter ‘squirmish’… and reveals she was ‘speechless’ recording Amazing Grace for the show’s new soundtrack

The pop star turned actress explained how she ‘secretly loves’ her more dramatic scenes in the TV drama, including one with co-star Matt Levett.

‘I love that there was some kind of confusion, and that got the audience off guard a bit, kind of squirmish in their seats,’ she confessed (sic).

‘That’s what entertainment is about, making things a little bit uncomfortable.’

The Darwin-raised talent also opened up about recording an emotional cover of Amazing Grace for the show’s soundtrack with late Aboriginal artist, Dr G. Yunupingu.

The song is played during a haunting scene in the second season as a ‘throwback’ to Billie’s character, where she is continuing ‘to explore issues of identity.’

Jessica sang the song with Dr. Yunupingu in his native Yolngu language, which he taught her while she was in the studio and he was ‘down the line on the phone’.

‘I was moved, kind of more speechless that I was in that moment with him. It was all very surreal to me that it was finally happening,’ she reflected.

The track was one of the last songs the 46-year-old artist recorded before he died in July, and Jessica called the collaboration a ‘privilege I’ll forever keep in my heart and mind.’

The Australian Idol runner-up will showcase the track at The Secret Daughter’s second season launch in Sydney on Wednesday.
