Jetstar passengers stranded in Japan given ‘muesli bars and blankets’ instead of hotel rooms

Passengers delayed more than 24 hours on a flight from Japan to Australia have been left fuming at Jetstar.

The flight was scheduled to take off from Kansai International Airport in Osaka at 9pm on Tuesday night, however heavy snowfall saw the plane delayed.

But rather than being ushered away to a hotel for the frosty night, one traveller who paid for a $2,500 return ticket to Sydney, said at 4am they were only given a blanket and a muesli bar.

Jetstar was not the only carrier affected by the weather event, with more than 200 flights cancelled at the airport.

‘My flight from Japan to Australia was delayed from 9pm to 1pm the following day. They gave us blankets and muesli bars instead of hotels,’ the passenger posted to Reddit, adding that ‘you get what you pay for.’  

The 1pm departure time came and went and the flight was rescheduled again for 4.45pm local time. 

That time also passed and the flight was set to leave at 6.15pm Osaka time for Cairns, but it was once again rescheduled. 

The Jetstar flight is now delayed until 10am tomorrow. 

Among the more than 600 comments under the original post was one from another person waiting for the same flight.

‘Hey, I’m literally waiting for this exact same flight at Kansai as well lol,’ the passenger wrote. 

‘To add insult to injury the blankets weren’t even from Jetstar, the airport gave them to us instead. 

‘These blankets were literally handed out at 4am and they kept everyone completely in the dark about the flight delays. No announcements, no nothing,’ they said.

A Jetstar spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia the flight was delayed because of the freezing conditions in Osaka, which is 400km south-west of the capital, Tokyo.

‘Due to heavy snow fall, the bridge connecting the mainland of Osaka to Kansai International Airport was closed overnight, preventing our crew from accessing the airport,’ they said. 

‘This caused a significant delay to our flight from Osaka to Cairns.

‘Unfortunately, the bridge closure also meant customers already at the airport were unable to leave, meaning they couldn’t access hotels in the city. 

‘We know it would have been an uncomfortable night for our customers and we offered support by providing them with meals, water and blankets.’ 

The spokesperson added that ‘We always do everything we can to avoid delays, but severe weather like this is out of our control.’
