She may be the daughter of one of Australia’s most iconic rock legends.
But Jimmy Barnes’ daughter Mahalia, 35, knows what it’s like to feel financially vulnerable as a full-time musician and songwriter.

While Mahalia has enjoyed success in her creative pursuits, she recognises that many others have not enjoyed the same outcome.
‘I’m not in a position of risk right now, but I know a lot of people who are. And all it would take would be one major setback — whether it was a health-related issue or not enough work coming in — and they would be sleeping on people’s couches for a while,’ she added.
The talented star also spoke to the publication about her father’s rough upbringing, noting: ‘Quite often, as a nine-year-old boy, he’d sleep out in the field across the road from the house that he was living in — because it felt safer.’

The couple released their third album Hard Expectations in April this year.
In a statement Mahalia said: ‘I am excited for people to hear this record. I really feel like the album has captured the spirit and energy of The Soul Mates, we experimented a bit more and really let loose in the studio this time, and to have Kirk Fletcher on the record with us was such a privilege.’

Mahalia and Ben also enjoyed a family milestone last year when they purchased a $960,000 Berrima home just 700 metres from her father Jimmy’s property.
Mahalia is currently promoting Mission Australia’s Sleepout campaign and Homelessness Week, which runs from August 6 – 12 this year.
