Jockey Michelle Payne reveals sexist comment said to her

She’s the acclaimed jockey who became the first female to win the Melbourne Cup in 2015.

And via an Instagram post on Tuesday, Michelle Payne revealed the sexist and misogynistic comment made about her appearance, at a race day event.

Sharing the exchange that described her as ‘disgusting’ and ‘fat’, the 32-year-old asked her followers: ‘Would you say this is acceptable to say to someone?’

Michelle shared the exchange with a male, that took place at a recent race day event: ‘Someone told me the other day you should see Michelle Payne and how fat she’s got…it’s disgusting! But look at you you don’t even look that bad.’

Not taking the insensitive comment to heart, the sports star continued: ‘Lol – would you say this is acceptable to say to someone [?]. This happened to me at the races today,’ alongside the tears of laughter and shrugging emojis.

Michelle also explained in the caption: ‘To be fair he did say he’d go back and tell them they were wrong, I wasn’t looking as bad as they said but to say it in the first place. [Just] As bad…lol.’

Comedic actress Magda Szubanski wrote in the comments section: ‘Speaking as a person who has managed to be fat and have a great life…who effing cares WHAT size you are [sic] ?!!’ 

‘You’re happy healthy and gorgeous. So, to use your own words – they can get stuffed!!,’ she continued. 

Channel Ten entertainment journalist Angela Bishop followed with: ‘Just ask them, out of interest, how many Melbourne Cups they have won [?].’

Michelle rode the Prince of Penzance at the Melbourne Cup in 2015, and became the first female to win the annual horse riding event. 

A biopic, Ride Like A Girl, on her race day win, is currently in production, with Adelaide-born actress Teresa Palmer playing Michelle.   

The film is slated for release in 2019.
