Joel Selwood reveals his fear about moving abroad with wife Brit and their 12-week-old son Joey

AFL great Joel Selwood has opened up about the realities of parenting and revealed the one thing which ‘scares’ him about his family upcoming ‘move’ to Europe.

The former Geelong captain told FEMAIL he and his family are excited for their upcoming trip, but he’s a bit worried about how his 12-week-old son will fare on the plane.

‘We are a little bit scared about it, but we aren’t the first people to do it and won’t be the last,’ he joked.

Adding that the little boy, Joey Victor, had a ‘practice flight’ to Adelaide recently and was ‘perfect’ the whole way.

Joel, his glamorous wife Brit and son Joey will be accompanied on their trip by his mum and dad.

They will start in Spain, then travel through France before setting themselves up in London ‘for an extended period of rime’.

Joel’s overseas travel sparked rumours he was working with Cricket Australia, he told DAILY MAIL there’s ‘no truth to them’ and insisted the trip is a much-needed holiday.

‘Brit always wanted to live overseas for a bit, I told her that we could once my footy career ended and hoped she’d forgotten about it.

‘She didn’t and now here we are, but I am actually getting really excited about it,’ he said.

The 34-year-old left footy on a high last year, stepping down after captaining the Cats to win the Premiership over the Sydney Swans.

He now works for the Storm, in a career move which shocked his former team mates, fans and even himself.

He will continue to work for the club remotely.

Joel said he is excited to be able to have access to so much top-tier sport while he’s away.

‘I am looking forward to being able to see the Tour De France,’ he said.

The new-dad admitted fitness and sport has been the last thing on his mind since his son arrived 12 weeks ago.

‘I used to exercise a few hours a day, now it is 20 minutes when I can get the chance,’ he said, blaming the change in his exercise regime on Joey.

‘Life is completely different,’ he said.

Brit and Joel had trouble conceiving, despite wanting to start a family for some time.

‘We did the journey and now we are on the other side and it has been a very enjoyable time,’ he said.

His ‘dad duties’ include doing the first night feed, something he enjoys.

‘It can be anywhere from 11.30pm and 2.30am. And I love that 30-minutes to an hour with him,’ he said.

‘I talk rubbish with him, look at his smiles and then rest him to go back to bed.’

Joel says ‘life after footy’ has been much busier than he expected.

One of his new roles include becoming a brand ambassador for Mosh, an online health platform he used to help him ‘grow back his hair’.

Now instead of copping flack over his receding hairline from his former teammates – they are now asking him to share his journey.

‘Losing my hair didn’t really bother me, but Mosh helped me do something about it,’ he said.

‘They have different programs but the one I followed was very cost effective,’ he said.

‘The boys at the footy club were the most surprised out of everyone. A few are getting married soon and keen to start the Mosh process in the lead up to their big day,’ he said.

Selwood is still involved with Geelong in a part time capacity as a club ambassador.

He won four flags with Geelong – Making him one of the club’s best ever players.
