Joey Chestnut defeats Takeru Kobayashi and sets world record with 83 hot dogs eaten in live Netflix special

Joey Chestnut defeated longtime rival Takeru Kobayashi in their hot-dog eating contest by setting a world record with 83 buns and wieners consumed in 10 minutes.

Chestnut beat his own world record by seven hot dogs in the 1-on-1 competitive-eating clash held in Las Vegas.

It was the first time since 2009 that Kobayashi and Chestnut had faced in a hot-dog eating contest.

This was also the first year since 2000 that neither man had competed in the Fourth of July Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Brooklyn, New York.

Chestnut did not compete in this year’s Nathan’s contest for the first time since 2004 due to his sponsorship with Impossible Foods. Kobayashi and Chestnut did consume beef hot dogs on Netflix.

Kobayashi finished the event with 66 hot dogs eaten after a one hot-dog deduction for not finishing what was in his mouth at the end of a 30-second consumption period following the 10-minute eating round.

The competitors were not allowed to dunk their buns or wieners in any kind of liquid, a new strategy for Chestnut that he said led to his new record.

Kobayashi and Chestnut have been eating against each other since 2005, when fresh out of college, Chestnut entered the competitive eating scene.

In 2007, Chestnut defeated Kobayashi for the first time by three hot dogs.

The historic 2008 event saw the time limit to eat as many hot dogs as possible drop from 12 minutes to 10. Chestnut and Kobayashi tied after that duration for an eat-off after 59 hot dogs. Chestnut won with five overtime dogs consumed in 50 seconds, seven seconds better than his Japanese rival.

The 2009 hot dog-eating contest was the last Independence Day event where Kobayashi and Chestnut competed against each other, with the American guzzler winning by more than three wieners.

Kobayashi has not competed in the Fourth of July event since 2009 due to not signing an exclusive contract with Major League Eating, leading to a run of Chestnut dominance.

From 2007-2023, Chestnut lost the hot dog-eating contest once, a two-dog loss to Matt Stonie in 2015.

Kobayashi said during the live special that competing 1-on-1 with Chestnut would be his final eating event.

Chestnut did not give any indication of future plans, but does not appear to be losing his prime eating form.
