Johanna Konta fails to reach WTA Finals

  • British No 1 Johanna Konta had been due to take part in next week’s Kremlin Cup
  • But Konta will miss the event in Russia as she struggles with a foot injury
  • She has failed to go beyond quarter-finals of any competition since Wimbledon
  • And she will now miss the season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore

Johanna Konta’s disappointing series of results since Wimbledon continues as the British No 1 has withdrawn from the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

Konta, who has failed to get beyond the quarter-finals of any tournament since last-four elimination at the hands of Venus Williams at SW1 in July, has been forced out with a foot problem.

Her absence from the competition means she will fail to qualify for the WTA Finals for the second season in a row.

Spaniard Caroline Garcia will instead take the eighth qualification spot for the season-ending showpiece in Singapore.

Konta could still travel to the event as an alternate but she has yet to make a final decision.

The left foot issue that has forced her out of the Kremlin Cup, which begins on Monday, is the same problem which caused the 26-year-old to miss the recent Hong Kong Open.
