John Alexander seen telling rape joke in 1995

Liberal Party politician John Alexander told a joke about a black man witnessing a rape and mocked the Irish in a cringeworthy video.

The former tennis champion put on a bad accent at a Brisbane pub in 1995 when he was a referee on the top-rating Seven Network show Gladiators.

During a night out with the crew, Mr Alexander used salty language to tell a joke about a ‘black guy in Chicago’ who witnessed a rape.

As he started the joke, someone called out ‘O.J. Simpson’, the Hollywood star and former American football great who was then on trial for the murder of his wife Nicole Brown Simpson, which he was later acquitted of.

‘No, no, no, this is not murdering wives and stuff,’ Mr Alexander replied.

Mr Alexander, who is now campaigning in a by-election for his old seat of Bennelong in Sydney’s north, continued by telling the joke about the man giving evidence to a judge.

‘He says, “That guy there was f***ing that sheila”,’ he said.

‘Judge goes, “You can’t say those words like that.”

The joke takes a cringeworthy turn when Mr Alexander tells the crowd about this black man rephrasing his evidence.

‘He’s getting really frustrated and he said, “Well, your honour, it was like this: there were 10 toes up, there were 10 toes down. There were two a***holes going round and round”.

‘”If that ain’t f***ing I’ll pay the fine”.’

The joke evoked a small smattering of applause.

Earlier, Mr Alexander told another sexual joke in a bad Irish accent about a priest hearing a confession.

It’s about a Catholic clergyman who wants to know the name of the young woman a member of his congregation had slept with, so he could have some sexual fun.

‘He says, “Tell me, was it that little tramp with the curly hair, Nellie?”,’ Mr Alexander said.

‘He says , “I know, I know, it’s always the quiet ones.”‘

The joke ends with the priest saying ‘I’ve got three certainties for Saturday night’ after the man in the confessional rules out three possibilities.

Gladiators contestant Alex Sanz posted the video on YouTube in 2011, a year after Mr Alexander defeated former ABC presenter Maxine McKew to win the federal seat of Bennelong from Labor.

Mr Alexander resigned from parliament earlier this month after discovering he was a dual British citizen.

He is re-contesting his old seat in a December 16 by-election against former New South Wales Labor premier Kristina Keneally.
