For Pep Guardiola, it was the Champions League. His time at Manchester City was never going to be complete until that prize was on his list of honours.

With Rory McIlroy, it was Augusta and a Green Jacket. How could such a sumptuous golfer go through his career shorn of the most famous garment in sport? As much as he played it down, the outpouring of emotion in Georgia told you different.

That John Gosden finds Guardiola and McIlroy in his orbit as reference points this weekend should outline exactly what is at stake at Newmarket, which stages the first Classic of the season.

Gosden’s yard has been all-conquering down the years: there have been more than 3,000 successes, 100 of which have been at Group One level.

He has been champion trainer six times. But there has been no 2,000 Guineas. Like it was for Guardiola and McIlroy, this statistic makes no sense.

This, however, is when it all could change as Field Of Gold, his representative in the Betfred-sponsored contest, has outstanding claims.

There was an attempt on Newmarket’s Warren Hill gallop from Gosden to say the 2,000 Guineas being absent from his c.v. is not a ‘glaring omission’ — he has had 11 tries since 1990 and not had a runner in the race since 2019.

Yet you wonder whether he will have a better chance, as Field Of Gold ticks all the boxes.

The manner of his warm-up run in last month’s Craven Stakes led his price to collapse and it was no wonder. He was not fully tuned up on that bitingly cold afternoon.

‘He is quite an imposing horse,’ said Thady Gosden, who trains the colt with his father.

‘He’s got a lot of size and stature. He looked like he would mature this year and he’s done that. He has got a wonderful mind and is such a laidback character.

‘He’s tightened up since the Craven and his work has been good. It’s a very deep race but it was always going to be. It’s going to be tough.’
