John Lennon once said the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. And looking at this newly released photo, he certainly appeared to have mastered walking on water.

The picture was taken by Paul McCartney, not at the Sea of Galilee but as Lennon jumped into a pool at a Miami hotel in February 1964.

The Fab Four were on holiday after their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, one of the most significant moments in pop history.

The picture is one of more than 250 in Sir Paul’s new book, 1964: Eyes Of The Storm, which captures the birth of Beatlemania.

It will be accompanied by a photography exhibition to coincide with the reopening of the National Portrait Gallery on Thurs – day following a three-year closure.
