John Malkovich, 68, dons a black coat and trilby hat as he enjoys solo lunch in Venice

John Malkovich put on a dapper display as he enjoyed a spot of lunch in Venice on Tuesday, during a break from filming Showtime’s upcoming series, Ripley.

The actor, 68, looked suave in a smart black coat which he styled above a coordinating shirt, trousers and shiny leather shoes.

Accessorising his look with a charcoal trilby hat, he shot a glum express as he sat alone before standing up and tucking a newspaper under his arm. 

John looked every inch the star in the suave ensemble during the filming.  

The highly-anticipated drama is set to star Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley with Dakota Fanning transforming into Marge Sherwood.

Pasquale Esposito will also become Pucci while Johnny Flynn gets into character as Dickie Greenleaf in the eight-part installment directed by Steven Zaillian.

Its plotline follows a ‘grifter named Ripley living in New York during the 1960s’ who is ‘hired by a wealthy man to begin a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder’, according to IMDb.

Prior to shooting, John lamented cancel culture for ruining comedy, insisting what may have been considered funny yesterday could well end an entertainer’s career the next in this age of ‘social media idiocy’.

He made the admonishment ahead of the release of his new Netflix comedy show, Space Force, in which he stars with Steve Carell.

When quizzed about how he thought the show’s jokes about President Donald Trump and his incessant tweeting habits would hold up, John told the New York Daily News’ Kate Feldman he was more focused on mourning the death of humor.

He said: ‘What’s funny yesterday becomes illegal today and the person uttering it must be canceled. Outrage culture is as strong as it is toxic.’

The Hollywood star opined that the emergence of social media has irrevocably changed the medium of comedy forever, now that the ire of a generation is the matter of a few characters, clicks and retweets away from being sparked.

He added: ‘Part of what makes [comedy] difficult is also the tidal wave of idiocy that can be created on social media in a day … the outrage mob.’
