John McGinn has committed his future to Aston Villa after signing a new long-term contract that will keep him at the club until 2027.

The Scotland international joined Villa from Hibernian in 2018 and quickly established himself as a fan favourite under then-manager Steve Bruce.

His rise through the ranks at Villa Park have led to McGinn becoming a regular in the team and Unai Emery’s arrival midway through last season has convinced the midfielder to extend his stay.

The 28-year-old’s previous deal was set to expire in two years but he will now remain as a Villa player for the next four seasons as the club strive to build on recent impressive campaigns.

McGinn was made captain of the Midlands-based side last summer and featured amongst the club’s top performers of the season despite only scoring one Premier League goal.

His midfield tenacity is a well-liked feature that makes McGinn a threat in both attacking and defensive scenarios and is expected to play a huge part as Villa compete in Europe next season.

Beaming supporters reacted emphatically to the news of McGinn’s contract extension on social media with some labelling him as Villa’s ‘best player’.

One supporter tweeted: ‘That’s fantastic. All set up to confirm legend status now. What a story. What you’ve done is arguably legendary. Add a glistening metal ornament and it’s unquestionable. Love ya John.’

Another added: ‘A much better all round player than Declan Rice and the money being spouted for him, makes good sense to get him tied in with a long contract.’

McGinn admitted that he feels Aston Villa are beginning to ‘fulfil’ the club’s ambitions when speaking after his contract renewal was confirmed.

‘There’s been plenty of ups and downs but I’ve loved every minute. We’ve been pretty successful and I think this season epitomised what everyone wants to achieve and shows the potential and ambition that everyone has,’ he told the club website.

‘We are really starting to fulfil that with the manager and staff in place at the moment.

‘If you told me when I was young you’d be playing every week in the Premier League against the best players in the world for a club like Aston Villa, it’s just a pinch yourself moment. I’m loving it, don’t take it for granted and just try every day to be the best that I can be,’ he said.

The extension caps a good month for McGinn, who was part of the Scotland squad that extended their 100 per cent start to Euro 2024 qualifying thanks to victories over Norway and Georgia.
