England international John Stones has signed a new five-year deal at Manchester City
As first reported by Sportsmail on Monday night, Stones has accepted the new terms and will continue as first choice next season as City look to defend their Premier League title.
Stones’ career at the club looked to be coming to an end until he regained his place last season and forged an outstanding central defensive partnership with Ruben Dias.
The 27-year-old’s contract was due to run out in June but he has agreed a new deal worth £250,000 a week until 2026.
Pep Guardiola looked to have given up on the English defender after the 2019-20 season
Stones’ turnaround saw him become a permanent City starter and regain his England place
Just a year ago the Stones was being linked with moves away from the Etihad, with heavy interest from Crystal Palace.
Talk of a move came after the injury-hit centre-back’s form deserted, leading his confidence to dissipate as he fell down Guardiola’s pecking order.
After signing the deal Stones said: ‘I couldn’t be happier. I love being part of this squad. There are so many quality players here and I know we can continue winning trophies, which is my main focus.
‘Working with the manager is a dream – he has taught me so much about the game and I feel like I learn something new every single day.
‘The success we’ve had in the last four years has been incredible. To be a part of it has been a dream come true and I just want to continue winning.
‘This is the best place for me to play my football and fulfil my ambitions,’ he added.
Stones scored four goals last season as he regained form and became a key man in City’s team
