Social media users who claim they were at the famous cricket ground said Barrett was removed from the venue for skulling a beer.

One man said he was sitting ten seats away from Barrett when the New Zealander was spotted by a fan.

‘He had half a beer and the boys chanted “skull”,’ the man said, adding that Barrett only had half a beer when he complied with the chants.

‘Barrett presented as calm and at no stage was arrogant or non-compliant,’ the man said.

‘At no point did Barrett appear intoxicated just enjoying a day in the sun supporting some fellow Kiwis on the big stage.’

Others called the whole situation  ‘bulls***’ and claimed ‘he did nothing wrong’.

One cricket fan told Stuff his nephew got a photo with the footballer.

He said Barrett was extremely approachable accepting an autograph and a picture’.

‘Kicked out of the cricket for basically no reason at all. Can’t believe that he couldn’t enjoy a day out with his mates,’ the man said.

Barrett’s brother Beauden simply retweeted the comment but did not add anything further to explain what had happened.
