Jose Mourinho claims ‘complete player’ Harry Kane has everything but a trophy and cites why he hasn’t won yet in his career – as he gives his prediction about who’ll win the Euros

Jose Mourinho believes Harry Kane would have a trophy to his name if he was not sacked by Tottenham just days before the 2021 Carabao Cup final.

Kane captained Mourinho’s Spurs side during the Portuguese’s 17 months in charge between 2019 and 2021.

Now at Bayern Munich, the England captain is still yet to get his hands on a trophy in senior football, despite breaking numerous individual records, and making finals, during his career.

Mourinho, the new Fenerbahce manager, led Kane and Tottenham to one of those finals in 2021, the Carabao Cup against Manchester City. But in a shock to everybody, he was sacked less than a week before the trip to Wembley.

The 61-year-old coach believes Kane would have silverware to his name if he wasn’t given the chop. He said: ‘The only thing he is missing is to win a trophy. He was my player at Tottenham, and I was going to win one with him, but I was sacked six days before the final.’

Kane has played under several top-level managers during his time as a player, but he only scored more under Mauricio Pochettino than he did under Mourinho.

Despite not succeeding when it comes to the topic of trophies, Kane’s former boss is convinced he has everything else a player could wish for.

Speaking Topps in his role as Global Ambassador, ahead of Euro 2024, Mourinho added: ‘Kane has scored goals for Tottenham, and I had no doubts that he would score goals for Bayern.

‘Harry is a fantastic, complete player who scores goals from all over the pitch but isn’t selfish – he assists, drops deep, builds play, presses, defends.’

Kane will be hoping his trophy hoodoo can come to an end this summer as he leads England out at the Euros in Germany.

The Three Lions are looking to go one step further than they managed three years ago, losing the final of the tournament to Italy at Wembley.

However, they will face stiff competition from several top countries in their hunt for glory, including Mourinho’s home country of Portugal. The Fenerbahce coach is backing his fellow countryman to be in the fight for the trophy.

‘I don’t want to be disrespectful about previous generations that we had, but in terms of squad depth and quality, we are probably now the best we have ever been and Portugal can go on to win it,’ said Mourinho.

‘It’s about having confidence, self-belief that they can beat anyone. I don’t want to say Portugal are the best team, but Spain, France, England, and Germany are not better.

‘The best problem for a coach is having to choose who to play because there are two great right-backs, two great left-backs, two great positional midfielders – and I say two only because there is a 23-man squad but there are more.’

While Mourinho thinks Portugal, who won the competition back in 2016, have a good chance of going far in Germany, he has suggested there will be three other countries fighting them tooth and nail for glory.

The Fenerbahce boss stated: ‘If there is a surprise, I will be surprised! France and Germany always do well. Portugal and England are better than ever.

‘These four teams. I’m not certain about Spain but the football they play and the players they have are of the highest quality. Italy or Belgium would be a surprise.’
