Jose Mourinho SENT OFF after furious reaction to being denied a penalty… as maverick Roma boss has to be RESTRAINED from confronting the referee by his coaching staff in defeat by Atalanta

  • Jose Mourinho had to be restrained by Roma’s coaching staff after disagreement
  • The Portuguese manager felt his side were denied a clear penalty call
  • He was sent off by the referee Daniele Chiffi in the 55th minute of Atalanta clash

Jose Mourinho had to be held back by his staff before being sent off in Roma’s home Serie A clash with Atalanta on Sunday night.

The 59-year-old Portuguese manager came onto the pitch to remonstrate with the referee after disagreeing with a rejected penalty call at the Stadio Olympico.

Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo was brought down by Atalanta centre-back Caleb Okoli in the 54th minute, but it was not given as a spot kick, and was instead issued as a foul the other way.

Mourinho was issued with a red card by man in the middle Daniele Chiffi – and it is not the first time that the ‘Special One’ has been dismissed from the touchline during his time at Roma.

The crowd responded to the incident by singing the name of their manager, and cheering, despite losing his important presence on the touchline.

Roma went 1-0 down in the first half after Giorgio Scalvini scored after 35 minutes.

Mourinho has been in charge at Roma since May 2021, having previously managed English clubs Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in a career which has also seen him manage in his native Portugal, and Real Madrid in Spain.
