Joseph to return as Broncos coach in 2018

The Denver Broncos announced Monday that head coach Vance Joseph will return in 2018 despite a 5-11 record in his first season.

There was speculation the Broncos were ready to make a change, but team president and general manager John Elway tweeted “we believe in Vance as our head coach.”

“Vance and I had a great talk this morning about our plan to attack this offseason and get better as a team. We believe in Vance as our head coach. Together, we’ll put in the work to improve in all areas and win in 2018,” Elway said on Twitter.

The 45-year-old Joseph became the Broncos’ first African-American head coach after he replaced Gary Kubiak last January when Kubiak stepped away from coaching due to health concerns. Joseph’s Broncos finished in last place in the AFC West in his first season as an NFL head coach.

The Broncos closed the season on Sunday with a 27-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and now head into another offseason still searching for their quarterback of the future.

Quarterbacks Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch and Brock Osweiler all started games this season for the Broncos, whose eight-game losing streak from Oct. 15 to Dec. 3 was their longest since 1967. Six of those losses were by double digits and four by at least 20 points.

Elway thanked the Broncos’ fans and said the “2018 season starts today.”

“To all our fans: THANK YOU for your tremendous support and sticking with us through a tough year,” Elway tweeted. “This wasn’t the season anyone expected, but we’ll learn from it and be better because of it. Our 2018 season starts today.”
