Jules Sebastian opens up on the challenges of motherhood

Most parents will admit that adjusting to life with a newborn is something that’s done on the fly, as there’s not much to prepare you for the journey ahead.

Mother-of-two Jules Sebastian recently shared her own experiences of motherhood during aThinkergirls podcast, revealing she’d had her own share of difficulties with her babies.

During the course of her frank discussion on parenting, Jules told hosts Stacey June and Kristie Mercer raising her newborn babies was easily the ‘hardest thing I’ve ever done.’

‘Maybe I’m just not a newborn person, I found that phase of life super duper exhausting and hard,’ she said.

The busy mum, who is also a stylist and a presenter, confessed that part of her struggle with early motherhood came down to the fact that she wasn’t really getting enough sleep.

‘Sleep is so important. It’s something I’ve definitely learned now that I get sleep.’

Jules said that shifting her priorities so she could focus on raising her two boys, Hudson, five, and Archie, two, helped her to become a better parent.

‘I’m a pretty chilled person, but I was very anxious person and I didn’t realise until that feeling left me.’

Making more time to be with her family has meant Jules has scaled back parts of her career this year so she can do things like daily school runs as well as cooking a family meal each night.

‘I styled for about a decade, had the babies and it just got really difficult. The hours are crazy and I wanted to see my kids,’ she said.

‘I fought it for so long, having babies, trying to do everything, have the perfect life and trying to keep it all together.’

Jules said once she ‘surrendered’ she found motherhood became easier, and she changed as a result.

She admitted her biggest struggle after her first child was born was learning to adjust her life to the needs of her baby.

‘I remember when I came home from hospital with Hudson, I needed to get milk… what is a five-minute exercise turns into a 45-minute thing.

‘You’ve just made a human being and that human being needs you 100 per cent of its life. That’s it now.’

Jules, who is married to pop star Guy Sebastian, said coming to terms with how much her life had changed after the birth of her babies was ‘very, very jarring’.

‘I like doing what I want when I want to do it. But with babies, they force you to be less like that.

‘I was almost a bit resentful. Once I just surrendered, these two precious little angels that need me to take care of them, what a privilege and what an honour.’

Though Jules encourages anyone considering starting a family to ‘100 per cent do it’, and said it was the best thing she’d ever done, she also offers some sage words:

‘You just have to know it is life-altering, un-take-back-able and everything changes.’
