Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool’s goal is top four despite leading league

‘It’s the most important thing for this club’: Jurgen Klopp claims Liverpool’s main goal is top four despite leading Premier League with seven games left

  • The Merseyside club are currently top of the table with seven games left
  • Manchester City are just two points behind the Reds with a game in hand

Six more points from seven games and Jurgen Klopp will secure the target that Liverpool start each season aiming to achieve: Champions League qualification.

The past two seasons have boiled down to nail-biting final days, but that they are as good as over the line with seven games to play is not lost on Liverpool’s manager.

‘If we go in the Champions League for a third consecutive year then that is big,’ said Klopp, who has an almost full-strength squad as Liverpool prepare to host Tottenham on Sunday.

‘It’s the most important thing for this club. We need the money to do our things and stuff like that. That’s absolutely brilliant.

‘Going through the group stage against Napoli was massive, now the next round against Bayern was massive and now we have a quarter-final (against Porto). Champions League is so far a success story for us and hopefully it will stay like that.

‘We are not too worried but I don’t celebrate it already because we know for a while that people are not 100 per cent satisfied if we qualify for the Champions League because they want to be first, top of the table, after the last match day. We know that. That’s what we want as well.’

The signing of Virgil van Dijk in January last season was the moment Klopp believes they turned into a serious team once again.

‘I said pretty much the same to Gini Wijnaldum as I said to Virgil,’ Klopp said. ‘When Virgil made his decision it was a fantastic day.’
