Kai Havertz reveals surprise over Thomas Tuchel sacking as he bemoans Chelsea’s miserable season

Kai Havertz has revealed his surprise at Thomas Tuchel’s sacking earlier this season as he delivered a damning verdict on Chelsea’s miserable campaign.

Bayern Munich boss Tuchel was sacked by Chelsea just seven games into the season at a time when they were sitting sixth in the Premier League, and had made a poor start in the Champions League.

Since then, the Blues have axed Graham Potter and installed Frank Lampard until the end of the season.

Chelsea are 12th in the league and crashed out of the Champions League to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

Havertz, who has scored nine goals in 41 appearances this season, said he felt Tuchel’s sacking ‘came out of nowhere’ and admitted that it has been a tough campaign.  

He has also revealed his surprise to Thomas Tuchel’s sacking just seven games into the season

‘Everything that can go wrong went wrong for us this year,’ Havertz told German publication Kicker. 

‘The season actually started relatively quietly. We had a change of ownership which was a big change for the club.

‘And then Thomas Tuchel was fired, which of course always makes a difference in a team like this when you’ve been successful with a coach and he gets fired out of nowhere.’

Chelsea have made a poor start to life under club legend Lampard, with five consecutive defeats leaving them 12th in the table, and though relegation is not a concern, they are just nine points clear of the bottom three.

Havertz added: ‘Now we have our backs to the wall and not (doing) very well in the table. 

‘Of course it’s easy to find excuses. I’m not a fan of blaming everything on something else. At the end of the day. We’re all professional footballers and we have to win a game sometimes.’

Chelsea travel to the Emirates this evening to play Arsenal who will be hoping to jump back to the top of the Premier League with a victory.

Haverz though hopes to ‘annoy’ the Gunners in their quest to get themselves back on track, following their costly 4-1 defeat to Man City last week.  

He said: ‘We hope to tease Arsenal a little bit. They’re in the title fight now, which is where we want to be. And if you can beat your opponent, that’s always good for the fans.’

Havertz though is hopeful Chelsea can return to form and hamper Arsenal’s title chances

Chelsea will be keen to get to the end of the season and focus on the next campaign, with the Blues likely to hire Mauricio Pochettino as their next permanent manager. 

Chelsea co-owners Behdad Eghbali and Todd Boehly have been discussing their next appointment in California amid reports Pochettino will be offered the job soon.

He has been the frontrunner since former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann pulled out of the running amid concerns over the process, having believed he was a shoo-in for the role.
