A NSW driver is lucky to be alive after a kangaroo smashed through their windscreen in the state’s Hunter region before landing and dying in the back seat.
A dramatic photograph of the smashed windscreen was shared on a NSW Police Facebook page on Thursday.
The driver had been making their way along the Golden Highway at Jerrys Plains about 6am when the Mitsubishi utility struck the roo, police said.
So powerful was the force of the impact that the animal smashed through the front passenger seat and landed in the back of the vehicle.
‘Fortunately there were no passengers,’ police said in their Facebook post.
Some people remarked the stretch of road was notorious for roo strikes.
Chief Inspector Phillip Brooks of the traffic and highway patrol command said all NSW residents should be aware of the risk of hitting kangaroos, especially given long, dry periods of warm weather.
‘It’s not unlike any other aspect of road safety, in that all road users should drive to the conditions,’ he told Fairfax Media.
