Eni Aluko has warned England that they must be prepared for the challenge Spain’s Aitana Bonmati will bring ahead of the World Cup final on Sunday.

Sarina Wiegman’s side have enjoyed an excellent tournament so far, with the Lionesses qualifying for a World Cup final for the first time in their history with victory over hosts Australia on Wednesday.

The final hurdle separating England and World Cup glory is Jorge Vilda’s Spain, a well-drilled unit bursting with talent and creativity that have conceded just three goals at the tournament whilst scoring 21.

Speaking following Sweden’s victory over Australia in the third place playoff on Saturday, Aluko earmarked Bonmati as a threat the Lionesses will need to be on the lookout for.

‘[Bonmati is] someone England are going to have to be aware of, she knows exactly what she’s doing, she’s really important for this Spanish team, won Champions Leagues with Barcelona, she’s so deceptive.’

Fellow former England star Karen Carney agreed with Aluko’s assessment, adding that the Barcelona midfielder is a ‘joy’ to watch.

‘She’s incredible, really good feet. She’s a joy, I’m excited to see her play even though it’s going to be against us tomorrow.’

Carney also hailed the performances of Alex Greenwood, with the Man City star retaining her place as Wiegman switched to a back three and starting every game in the team’s run to the final.

‘She missed out in last years Euros, and to come through and be solid, that back three is the spine of the team.’
