Britain’s worst mum Karen Matthews gets job as a CARER…but leaves just weeks later after getting too close to elderly client’s husband

  • Karen Matthews was the carer for elderly couple after meeting them in church
  • The 44-year-old mother-of-seven, from Yorkshire, cared for the frail woman
  • She was paid to cook and clean for the woman, but ‘got too close’ to her husband

The UK’s ‘worst mother’ Karen Matthews was given a job as a carer before being forced to leave because she was getting ‘too close’ to her frail client’s elderly husband.

Matthews, who was jailed in 2008 for faking the kidnapping of her eight-year-old daughter Shannon, was employed by the elderly couple after they took pity on her.

The 44-year-old mother-of-seven, from Yorkshire, met the couple in church and they took pity on her, giving her a job.

They paid her to cook and clean after the woman, 65, had a hospital stay and was unable to look after herself properly.

However, Matthews was sacked just weeks later because her elderly charge thought she was getting too close to her husband.

The husband, 70, claims the relationship between him and Matthews was innocent friendship, but confirmed that the ex-convict had been removed from her role.

It is believed that Matthews was picked up by the couple every morning at her two-bed council home.

They then drove her 15 minutes to their house.

A source close to the couple told the Mirror: ‘They are devout Christians and took pity on Karen after meeting her at church.

‘They know what she did but gave her a second chance.

‘They paid her to come round every day to help care for the woman and do the housework. At first, things were great and they were glad of the help in the house but soon things became tense.’

It is thought that, as part of her role, she did the washing, cleaning and tidying.

Matthews was jailed over faking the kidnap of her daughter Shannon to cash in on the £50,000 reward put up after the child, who was nine years old, disappeared in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire in 2008.

She and her accomplice Michael Donovan were convicted of kidnap, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice after Shannon was found in Donovan’s flat 24 days after she went missing.

The mother-of-seven, who served four years of her eight-year jail term, has insisted she is not Britain’s worst mother because she ‘didn’t kill anybody’, and has claimed to have suffered more abuse than Baby P’s mother Tracey Connelly and Maxine Carr, who covered up for Soham killer Ian Huntley.
