Today show hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo have defended Chris Hemsworth and his wife Elsa Pataky, after they were slammed by fans over a birthday cake prank on their twin sons.

Karl, 48, and Sarah, 35, said they couldn’t believe the criticism directed at the Hollywood star couple, after followers took issue with the ‘ridiculous’ way Elsa pushed one of their son’s face into his cake.

‘Saying this is a violent image is a bit too much, a bit of a stretch, they’re eating cake!’ she said.

Elsa and Chris were slammed for their parenting style following birthday celebrations for their twin boys, Tristan and Sasha, on Monday.

Some of the couple’s Instagram followers took issue with the ‘ridiculous’ way Elsa pushed one of their son’s face into his cake.

The Spanish actress’ Hollywood hunk husband, 39, posted an image of the fun mother-son bonding moment as the couple threw a party for the twins’ ninth birthday at their $30m Byron Bay mansion.

In the picture, the 46-year-old could be seen playfully pushing her son’s head into a chocolate cake with the help of her daughter India.

‘Why people smash their kid’s face in the cake is above my understanding but whatever,’ one person wrote.

‘Why do people think this is funny?’ someone else chimed in.

‘In my country [this is] done, but it’s very poorly [looked upon] because several accidents have already happened,’ another pointed out.

Chris shared a tribute to his sons alongside the photo, writing: ‘Happy 9th birthday to my two little men! Only one way to eat cake in this house and that’s to have mum slam your head into it face first!!’

‘”Hey mum I don’t like chocolate cake I prefer vanilla,”‘ he teased. ‘”Oh really son, what about now?”‘

In the photo, the actor smiled as he watched the prank from a slight distance with his hands on his hips.
