Karl Stefanovic blasts Germaine Greer’s ‘abhorrent’ claims that rape is just ‘bad sex’

Karl Stefanovic has blasted Germaine Greer’s ‘abhorrent’ claim that rape is just ‘bad sex’.

The controversial feminist, 79, insisted on Wednesday most rape was just ‘bad sex’ and poured scorn on the idea that victims suffered from post-traumatic stress.

Ms Greer said convicted rapists should not be sentenced to jail time, instead serve community service.

Today show host Karl Stefanovic said on Friday Ms Greer’s comments were ‘the most abhorrent thing I’ve heard in a long time’.

In an impassioned rant, Stefanovic said he was ‘loath to give her anymore oxygen than she deserves’ but he could not remain silent.

‘She’s lost the plot now, she’s lost the plot,’ he said.

‘It defies any logic.

‘What message does that send to the perpetrators of those crimes? What is she thinking?’

Co-host Georgie Gardener agreed, saying she was appalled by the lack of empathy Ms Greer showed victims of rape.

‘Anyone who’s been in that position, just listening to that I can’t think of anything more offensive,’ she said.

‘As if it’s not hard enough coming to terms with that sort of crime and healing from it, and to hear those comments.’

Once a fan of the outspoken feminist, Gardener said she could no longer support Ms Greer.

‘It’s a great shame, because as a feminist I always used to sit up and listen to Germaine Greer, but I’m finding her increasingly irrelevant,’ she said.

In a contentious interview, Ms Greer said: ‘Most rapes don’t involve any injury whatsoever. We are told it’s one of the most violent crimes in the world – bullsh**’.

‘Most rape is just lazy, just careless, just insensitive,’ she said.

‘Instead of thinking of rape as a spectacularly violent crime – and some rapes are – think about it as non-consensual, that is, bad sex.

‘Sex where there is no communication, no tenderness, no mention of love.’

When asked what would be an appropriate punishment for men found guilty of rape, she said: ‘Two hundred hours of community service would do me.
