Karl Stefanovic competes in 17km ocean paddle

Illness forced him to walk off the Today show after just 40 minutes on the air on Friday.

But on Saturday, it seems Karl Stefanovic was feeling better as he competed in the 17km Lifeflight Ocean Paddle on the Sunshine Coast, The Courier Mail reported.

Partnering with Ironman legend Grant Kenny in the charity fundraiser, the 44-year-old explained ‘a good sleep’ had miraculously done him the world of good.

‘I was very sick yesterday but had a good sleep and don’t feel too bad now,’ he told the publication.

‘But this is a great cause, so I wanted to do my bit.’

According to the report, Karl was roped into the charity event by his future father-in-law Bob Yarbrough, a veteran paddler.

The energetic display came mere hours after Karl complained of feeling sick on Friday’s Today Show and joked about providing his co-host Georgie Gardner with a ‘sick note’ before leaving.

He had been coughing and sounding unwell since the the start of the broadcast at 5:30am and eventually went home at around 6:10am.

At that point, he left the desk and walked off set clutching a box of tissues.

Karl’s early weekend follows a difficult few months for the Channel Nine star.

The network’s CEO Hugh Marks fired a warning shot last month following a particularly bad run of ratings for the Today show.

In a withering statement, Marks acknowledged that Karl’s tumultuous personal life had contributed to falling ratings.

'Go to bed, for goodness sake!' Karl had been coughing and sounding unwell since the the start of the broadcast at 5:30am and eventually went home at around 6:10am

‘Clearly, it’s been a tough and challenging year for Karl and Today,’ he said, adding that while Karl’s job was safe for now, everyone on the show – ‘especially Karl’ – needed to lift their game.

Today’s ratings have been plummeting ever since Karl separated from his wife-of-21-years Cassandra Thorburn in mid-2016.

It is also believed his engagement to fashion designer Jasmine Yarbrough has been a turn-off for female viewers over the past 18 months.
