Karl Stefanovic misses out on alcohol sponsorship to Michael Clarke

Karl Stefanovic fumes after missing out on an alcohol sponsorship as Michael Clarke promotes his deal with a Sydney distillery on the Today show

Former Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke has landed a sponsorship deal with a Sydney distillery – and it has left Today host Karl Stefanovic feeling jealous.

The retired batsman, 40, promoted his partnership with Bevmart on Nine’s breakfast show on Wednesday, but boozer Karl couldn’t hide his bitterness.

The 47-year-old looked dejected as co-host Allison Langdon consoled him with pats on the back during the tongue-in-cheek interview.

Karl jokingly said: ‘You know what, Clarkey, no one has given more support to alcohol in this country than Karl Stefanovic.

‘And still I can’t get a bloody alcohol sponsorship!’

‘It is just outrageous, and Clarkey swans in and scoops up a scotch sponsorship. Come on, Australia!’ he laughed.

‘What does a man have to do?’ Allison asked.

Michael replied: ‘We’ll look after you, don’t worry about that.’

‘They have enough options for you, Karlos, because I know you are not too fussy when it comes to alcohol. You will try any spirit!’ he chuckled.

It comes after Karl recently admitted he’d put on maybe ’12, 13 [kilos]’ as a result of Sydney’s Covid lockdown.

He told the Fifi, Fev & Nick breakfast show last month he’d been indulging at home, saying: ‘I rediscovered my love for alcohol on the weekend.’

The Channel Nine star explained: ‘Friday after I get home from work at 9:30 in the morning, I always try and have a little sleep.

‘I try and muster all the courage I can to get past midday before I have a drink, and then I just start with light beers and then I gradually move up to vodkas and then I’m asleep by seven o’clock.’

‘On Saturday, I’m definitely a red wine person because I’ll cook something,’ he said, adding that he likes to cook Wagyu steak that sets him back ‘about $180 a kilo’.

He continued: ‘It’s my go-to because a local butcher does it for me.’
