Karl Stefanovic reveals the real fallout of Ubergate

He made headlines earlier this year when a private phone conversation he had in an Uber with his brother Peter was made public.

And on Thursday, Today show host Karl Stefanovic revealed the real fallout of the scandal while speaking to KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O.

The 43-year-old TV presenter joked that he hasn’t spoken to his younger brother since the incident, and admitted that Channel Nine ‘weren’t happy’ about the saga.

‘I haven’t spoken to Pete since’: Karl Stefanovic reveals the real fallout of Ubergate… admitting Channel Nine ‘weren’t happy’

‘I haven’t spoken to Pete since,’ Karl said with a laugh.

Radio host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson asked if Karl was ‘p***ed off’ that Peter had put him on speaker in the back of the hire car.

‘What do you think, what do you think?,’ he said.

‘I said Tongan Sam is coming around and you must be silenced,’ he joked, referencing the infamous long-time bodyguard of Nightclub owner John Ibrahim.

‘He’s extremely apologetic, I hear. It’s just one of those things and again, apologies for any offence caused,’ he added.

While he joked about his brother, the interview hit a more serious tone when he spoke about the fallout with Channel Nine and having to face the music with his TV bosses.

‘Channel Nine weren’t happy and upstairs weren’t happy and fair enough,’ he said.

‘Whatever comes out of my mouth, I’m responsible for. And if that brings the company disrepute, that’s on me.’

Elsewhere in the interview, Karl admitted he often calls radio host Kyle Sandilands for advice and the shock jock was one of his first port of calls following ‘Ubergate’.

‘His advice is always very sound and he said “mate, I don’t think it’s a big deal, you have to say sorry but when you’re losing advertisers, that’s when you have to worry. I’ve been in that s**t and it’s not a nice place, get over yourself!”

Karl added that when he said co-star Richard Wilkins was ‘not willing to share his entertainment contacts’ in the call, he was only joking.

The ‘Ubergate’ scandal erupted back in March when New Idea reported details of the phone call.

The magazine suggested the discussion went on for more than 30 minutes and featured Karl taking pot shots at his Today co-host Georgie Gardner and Entertainment Editor Richard Wilkins.

During the conversation, Karl was also said to have claimed his bosses at the TV network were ‘out of touch’.

It’s was also reported that he suggested Peter, who is currently the co-host of Weekend Today, should ask for a $60,000 pay rise.

Shortly after Karl told The Sunday Telegraph that he was ‘angry’ with himself for being so ‘stupid’.

‘I was angry with myself at first that I could be so stupid,’ Karl said.

‘I’ll be taking cabs from now on,’ he added.

Karl ended his statement with a glowing review on Georgie’s performance on the morning breakfast program, calling her: ‘The best thing to happen to the show in years.’

Peter also apologised and said he wanted to ‘move on.’
