Kate Middleton pays tribute to Princess Diana as she arrives to the US with Prince William

Kate Middleton paid tribute to her late mother-in-law by wearing a pair of stunning sapphire and diamond earrings that once belonged to Princess Diana as she arrived in America alongside Prince William on Wednesday.

The Prince and Princess of Wales were photographed stepping off a British Airways flight at Boston Logan International Airport at the start of their three-day whirlwind visit to the States – and Kate gave a sartorial nod to her husband’s late mother by opting to sport a very sentimental piece of jewelry as she exited the plane.

The mother-of-three chose a glittering pair of two-tiered flower-shaped earrings, which were previously owned by Princess Diana.

Diana was spotted wearing the earrings on several occasions before her death in 1997 – including when she attended the Met Gala in New York City in 1996 and during a visit to Canada in 1991.

Now, they’ve been passed down to Kate, who previously wore them back in June when she attended Trooping the Colour as part of the Queen’s birthday celebrations.

She paired the glamorous earrings with a chic, midnight blue pants suit made by the British luxury fashion house Alexander McQueen – the same label that designed her wedding dress in 2011.

She put on an incredibly elegant display in the $2,190 blazer and $890 boot-cut trousers. Underneath the jacket, she wore a knitted turtleneck in a matching color.

For her shoes, Kate opted for a simple pair of blue heeled pumps. She left her long, brown locks in loose waves around her face and seemed in good spirits as she walked alongside her husband.

She and William, who opted for a dark suit, flew to Boston on a commercial flight from London, and the trip marked the first time the pair have visited the US since 2014.

It will certainly be a busy few days for the couple, who are scheduled to visit Boston City Hall to meet the mayor later today.

They will also watch a basketball game this evening, and attend the Earthshot Prize Awards on Friday. Earthshot was set up by Prince William in 2020 as a contest to champion innovative environmental solutions.

This is not the first time that Kate has worn something previously owned by Princess Diana. Earlier this month, Kate was seen sporting a feather pendant which was gifted to Diana by the Queen Mother, as she welcomed South Africa’s President to the UK.

Princess Diana first debuted the brooch as a pendant at the Royal Opera House in 1982. She later wore it during a royal tour of Austria in 1986.

Kate wore another pair of Diana’s earrings in September at the Queen’s procession. The pearl earrings, made by the brand Collingwood, feature a round diamond stud, from which is suspended an additional round diamond and a bell cap set with three more rows of small diamonds. The bell caps each contain a pearl drop.

They became firm favorites of Diana’s, and were sported on royal tours of Australia, Canada, and Italy.

That same month, Kate also wore a pearl bracelet that originally belonged to Diana during a lunch held for governors-general of the Commonwealth nations at Buckingham Palace.

Kate and William’s trip to America came amid a furious race row in the Monarchy back home, which was sparked by the Prince’s own godmother, Lady Susan Hussey, a former lady-in-waiting to the late Queen.

Lady Hussey resigned from the royal household today, just hours before the Prince and Princess of Wales touched down in the US, after she was accused of racism at a Buckingham Palace reception set up by Queen Consort Camilla.

But William and Kate are ‘determined’ not to be side-tracked from their mission to launch the Prince’s Earthshot Prize awards and meet as many people from the local area as possible.

Upon their arrival, William referred to his adored grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in a statement shared to his Twitter account, describing her as one of life’s great optimists.

He wrote: ‘Catherine and I are delighted to be back in the United States and are extremely grateful to Governor Baker and The First Lady of Massachusetts for their warm welcome into Boston.

‘On this, our first overseas visit since the death of my grandmother, I would like to thank the people of Massachusetts and particularly of Boston for their many tributes paid to the late Queen. She remembered her 1976 bicentennial visit with great fondness.

‘My grandmother was one of life’s optimists. And so am I. That is why last year we launched the Earthshot Prize with the ambition to create a truly global platform to inspire hope and urgent optimism as we look to save the future of our planet.

‘To the people of Boston, thank you. I’m so grateful to you for allowing us to host the second year of the Earthshot prize in your great city. Catherine and I can’t wait to meet many of you in the days ahead.’
