Kate Ritchie admits that she once asked Silverchair to be her date to the Logies back in the ’90s

They were once Australia’s biggest band.

And former Home and Away star Kate Ritchie has confessed that she was a huge fan of Silverchair during their 90s heyday.

The 49-year-old said that she even went as far asking out members of the band to accompany both herself and her co-star Isla Fisher to the Logies.

She made the surprising revelation on Nova’s 69.9 Fitzy and Wippa with Kate Ritchie on Wednesday.

Appearing as guests on the breakfast show, Silverchair bass player Chris Joannou, 43, and drummer Ben Gillies, 43, told Kate they never got the invitation.

‘If that happens to be true and you had received the letter, would you have come with me and Isla?,’ Kate asked, putting the hitmakers on the spot.

‘Because we’ve read them all [our fan letters], that [one] must have got lost in the mail,’ replied Chris, after laughing off Kate’s suggestion.

‘Kate and Isla Fisher are still waiting for a reply,’ teased co-host Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald.

Later on, Ryan forced the issue and told the rockers that Kate was still keen for a date at next year’s Logies.

‘Yeah, we’re doing it,’ joked Chris.

The trio of school pals formed the group as teenagers and had a stunning rise to fame in the 1990s before splitting in 2011. But since then Chris and Ben have been estranged from their former bandmate, Daniel Johns.

The pair have just published a tell-all book about their time in Silverchair titled Love & Pain.

Elsewhere in the chat, the rockers were asked about their breakup with Johns and their painful memories.

‘I would say the messiness around the break up of the band,’ Ben replied.

‘And the lack of communication between the three of us is hard to swallow. and not having any closure because it was up in the air for so long,’ he continued.

‘i guess that was one of the reasons for doing the book, it will give us that closure that we wanted for so long.’

Asked whether they has been any attempt to sit down and talk through the break up with all of the members Ben simply said: ‘No’.

It comes after Johns ripped into Gillies and Joannou during an appearance on The Project in September 2022, where he labelled his estranged friends as ‘bitter, jealous, angry’.

He singled out Gillies, saying that the drummer had a ‘real problem’ with his fame, and claimed that both of his former bandmates ‘never come and see him’.

Neither Gillies nor Joannou responded at the time.

Formed in the NSW coastal city of Newcastle in 1992, Silverchair made headlines with their first album Frogstomp in 1995 and went on to sell 10million records worldwide.
