Kate Winslet breaks down in tears as she reflects on ‘absolutely appalling’ body shaming she experienced aged just 22 after starring in Titanic

Kate Winslet has broken down in tears remembering the body shaming she endured after starring in Titanic.

The actress, 49, who was then 22-years-old in 1997, got emotional and teared up during an interview with 60 Minutes as she remembered the criticism about her weight at the time.

Now starring in Lee which she also produced, she said: ‘It was absolutely appalling.

‘What kind of a person must they be to do something like that to a young actress who’s just trying to figure it out?’

Beginning to tear up, she said: ‘I did get face-to-face. I let them have it. I said, “I hope this haunts you”.

‘It was a great moment because it wasn’t just for me, it was for all those people who were subjected to that level of harassment. It was horrific, it was really bad.’

The interview includes a cut to a red carpet host telling Winslet she looked ‘a little melted and poured’ into a dress and that she should’ve worn a gown ‘two sizes larger.’

Speaking on her new role, which sees her play a Elizabeth Lee Miller, a fashion model who became an acclaimed war correspondent for Vogue magazine during World War II, Winslet recalled a recent moment when a crew member asked to her to ‘suck in’.

‘People say “oh you were so brave for this role because you’re not wearing any makeup”.

‘Do we say to the men, “oh you were so brave for this role, you grew a beard”? No we don’t. It happens to me all the time. It’s not brave, it’s playing the part.’

Asked if it’s true whether or not a crew member asked her to sit up because she was showing a lump, she said: ‘Yeah, you might want to kind of just suck in and sit up.

‘And no, I don’t think Lee would have done. I don’t care about showing that. It’s exhausting.’

Recently Winslet and her Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, 50, reunited 27 years later as they attended the screening of her new film Lee together in LA.

The pair starred together as Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater in James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster.

The former co-stars looked thrilled to be in each other’s company again as they shared a hug while posing for the cameras.

Speaking about her childhood and early career the Oscar winner said her drama teacher told her to she will only ever get ‘fat girl’ roles.

‘He told me, “Kate darling, if you’re going to look like this, you’re’ going to have to settle for the fat girl parts”.

‘I wasn’t even fat. It made me think I will show you, just quietly. It gave me a quiet determination.’
