Award-winning actress Kate Winslet has reignited the Titanic ‘door scene’ controversy by confirming a surprising detail about the famous scene.
During an October 21 interview on the Australian talk show The Project, Winslet, who starred in the 1997 blockbuster alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, clarified that the floating object her character Rose clings to in the iconic film is often misidentified.
‘People keep referring to it as a door. It actually wasn’t even a door,’ she clarified. ‘It’s a piece of bannister, like a stairway or something, that had broken off.
When asked the age-old question of whether there was ‘room on the door’ for Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Jack Dawson, Winslet joked that she had anticipated the query.
‘Who knows if (DiCaprio) could’ve (fit) on there or not,’ she said. ‘Honestly, I don’t have any insights here that anyone else hasn’t already tried to figure out.’

During a 2022 appearance on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, Winslet gave a more detailed answer as to her own theory about whether or not Jack could fit.
‘You’ve heard it here, for the first time, yes he could have fit, he could have fit on that door, but it would not have stayed afloat. It wouldn’t,’ Winslet said.
Titanic’s ending has caused a storm of protests among fans, with many attempting over the years to disprove that only Rose could have survived – insisting there was plenty of room on the door for Jack.
Some Reddit users even matched the debris to interior images of the fictional ship – and suggested then it might not be a door.
Director James Cameron told the Toronto Sun that he once commissioned a scientific study to test various survival scenarios for Jack and Rose, involving stunt doubles and different reenactments.
‘We took two stunt people who were the same body mass of Kate and Leo and we put sensors all over them and inside them and we put them in ice water and we tested to see whether they could have survived through a variety of methods and the answer was, there was no way they both could have survived. Only one could survive
‘[Jack] needed to die. It’s like Romeo and Juliet. It’s a movie about love and sacrifice and mortality. The love is measured by the sacrifice…Maybe after 25 years, I won’t have to deal with this anymore.’

The famous Titanic ‘door’ sold for a whopping $718,750 at auction in March at the Heritage Auctions’ Treasures from Planet Hollywood event.
The auction noted the door is ‘in reality part of the door frame just above the [ship’s] first-class lounge entrance’.
Its sale price beat Indiana Jones‘ bullwhip from Temple of Doom ($525,000) and Jack Nicholson ’s axe from The Shining ($125,000).
