Kath & Kim parody show forced to involve police after vile death threats: ‘Far-right snowflakes’

A drag show based on the popular Australian sit-com Kath & Kim has been hit with death threats from online trolls, leading producers to call in the police.

Fountain Lakes In Lockdown: A Drag Parody Play is currently touring Australia’s east coast and writer and performer Thomas Jaspers, and has attracted online abuse.

‘There have been a few hissy fits from far right snowflakes who are very upset that there’s men wearing dresses,’ Mr Jaspers told news.com.au.

‘Generally speaking, it (online abuse) is pretty silly stuff, but there have been some pretty serious comments that we’ve had to take a bit more seriously, where people are threatening the safety of the cast.’

The writer also revealed that the production team called in police at one stop on the tour itinerary.

‘Unfortunately in one town we have had to get in touch with the local police who have been amazing,’ Thomas said.

‘[They] said that they’ll be on-site for the event to make sure that if they do mobilise, that they won’t be allowed anywhere near the venue or anywhere near the team.’

Speaking directly to the trolls, Thomas urged them not to come to the show.

'There have been some pretty serious comments that we've had to take a bit more seriously, where people are threatening the safety of the cast,' Thomas told news.com.au

‘You don’t have to come. It’s actually got nothing to do with you,’ he  said.

The show, which recently enjoyed a sold out season in Melbourne, stars RuPaul’s Drag Race Down under runner-up Art Simone and drag queen Leasa Mann alongside actors Scott Brennan and Thomas Jaspers.

Art Simone, also known as Jack Daye, was named runner-up, alongside Karen From Finance and Scarlet Adams in the inaugural 2021 season of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under.

Set in the fictional Melbourne suburb of Fountain Lakes during COVID lockdowns, the parody has Kim attempting to become famous on TikTok, while Kath is worried that her beloved Kel has become an anti-vaxxer.

The original Kath & Kim, written and performed by Gina Riley and Jane Turner ran on the ABC, across three seasons from 2002 to 2005.

The lauded sit-com which also starred Magda Szubanski, Glenn Robbins and Peter Rowsthorn went on to become one of Australia’s most beloved comedies.

The hit comedy also boasted a litany of high-profile guest stars including Kylie Minogue, Little Britain’s Matt Lucas, Eric Bana, and cricket icon Shane Warne.
