Katie Holmes stepped away from her usual casual chic style and seemed to be trying a very different look as she ran errands in New York City on Friday.

New Yorkers walking past the Dawson’s Creek alum may have done a double take, trying to recognize the woman in a pair of very wide legged charcoal pants with a frayed hem and worn black leather ballet flats.

The actress, 45, who donned a sweater earlier in the week, took advantage of the warmer temperatures to offer a glimpse of her toned tummy by leaving her purple and white striped shirt partially unbuttoned.

Her long, dark hair was pulled back into a loose bun and her makeup looked natural behind a pair of black framed sunglasses.

Holmes carried a white and tan leather purse with a shoulder strap and a white shopping bag with purple lettering which contained a few purchases.

The actress recently took her only child, Suri Cruise, 18, to college, and is now an empty nester.

It’s believed the freshman will focus on acting and dance at the private university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, while her mom looks into new projects for film and the stage.

It has been reported that Suri’s father Tom Cruise, 62, has met his divorce agreement with Holmes and paid for his daughter’s college tuition, which is said to be about $65,000 a year.

The Rare Objects director and star was just days away from the beginning of previews for Thornton Wilder’s Our Town as she made her way through the Big Apple.

Holmes stars as Mrs. Webb in the revival of Pulitzer Prize winning drama.

Zoey Deutch, 29, stars as her daughter Emily.

At a recent promotional event, Holmes described Mrs. Webb as ‘strong, and thinks the character is ‘probably smarter than her husband.’

Richard Thomas, 73, of The Waltons fame will star as Mr. Webb, and Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory will tackle the role of Stage Manager.

Ephraim Sykes will star as George Gibbs and Billy Eugene Jones will play his father Dr. Gibbs in the contemporary update to the play.

The first look shows were scheduled to begin on September 17 with the official opening set for October 10 at the Barrymore Theater on Broadway.

Just last week, Holmes and Sykes were seen snuggling up with each other at the press preview for Our Town at the Algonquin Hotel in New York City.
