Katie Price defends taking teenage Gareth Gates’ virginity when she was six months pregnant: ‘Just because I was didn’t mean I couldn’t have a boyfriend!’

Katie Price has defended taking Gareth Gates’ virginity when she was six months pregnant with son Harvey.

The singer was just 17-years-old when he had sex for the first time with Katie, then 21, and initially denied the fling because he was worried about what his family would think.

Asked about the incident on the podcast Anything Goes with James English, Katie, 45, said: ‘I took his virginity when I was six months’ pregnant’.

As James shook his head, Katie then laughed: ‘What? You’re asking me. What you looking at, because I was pregnant?

‘Just because I’m pregnant don’t say I can’t have a boyfriend.’

The pair’s fling was short-lived and they had split by the time she welcomed her first son Harvey with ex Dwight Yorke.

Gareth initially denied rumours about their relationship when the pair got together in 2002.

He finally opened up about the fling on the Big Reunion in 2014, admitting: ‘We saw each other for 3 or 4 months and it was fun, she is a really lovely lovely girl.

‘I denied the whole Jordan thing because I was 17, I didn’t want my family to find out about my sex life. If I hadn’t of lied it wouldn’t have been a big deal, my family, friends and fans wouldn’t have felt as let down I guess.’

Finding himself in a high profile relationship at 17, Gareth wasn’t sure how to handle the attention he was getting.

The Unchained Melody singer continued: ‘For me I was very young, I had to say I don’t want to have a long term relationship at this age, so she sold the story, and I said it was all lies,

‘The only thing I thought in my head to do was say it had never happened, I felt I had to because I didn’t want my family to know about my sex life, I didn’t tell anyone my family or friends, so they all backed me.’

When discussing the effect of the relationship on his career, Gareth admitted the fling did have a lasting impact on his appeal in a frank discussion with his mum, Wendy.

Wendy said: ‘We chose to believe it didn’t happen. The reaction of people was awful, that people were talking about my son like that’

Gareth reflected: ‘I certainly had to warm people back to me, after not being honest with people.’

The Pop Idol star later revealed his liaison with Katie made him reconsider his career.

He told new! magazine: ‘It wasn’t too long after that I decided to take a break from the industry.

‘There are stars out there who are out there for the wrong reasons. I wanted to be recognised for my talent.’

Katie also expressed her regret at the fling, saying: ‘It’s terrible – I was still young, I was pregnant, I didn’t have the dad about and I still wanted to be loved.

‘It was wrong when I look back. It was over in seconds!’
